Providing Your Baby With a Healthy Start

Congratulations, We're Excited About Your Decision to Breastfeed
Breastfeeding allows you to provide your child with nutrition and nurturing that is so important during the early stages of life. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics says breastfeeding alone can satisfy your infant’s entire nutritional needs for the first six months of life. Breastfeeding also gives you quality time with your child, where they can feel safe, secure and loved.

Many women choose to strengthen the mother/child bond and give their babies the best in nutrition by breastfeeding.  Sometimes they need a little extra help learning the techniques and benefits of breastfeeding.  That's why Florida Hospital has opened a comprehensive Lactation Center.  Staffed by nurses who are International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants, the Breastfeeding Center at Florida Hospital offers personalized care and services, including:

·        Breastfeeding classes

·        Educational materials

·        Private Consultants

·        Breast pump sales and rental

·        Baby care books and supplies

·        Community programs

·        In-hospital support

·        Ongoing Mother/Baby lunch group meetings

·        In-service education to health care professionals

·        The Breastfeeding Support Line 407-303-7650 or 800-523-8941

The purpose of the Breastfeeding Center is to promote, educate, and assist health care professionals, families and others in the community in the breastfeeding process.  Lactation consultants and supplies are available by appointment at Florida Hospital Orlando, Altamonte, Celebration Health and Winter Park.

Why You Should Breastfeed

Breastfeeding is good for the baby and the mother. A mother’s milk has just what your baby needs – fat, sugar, water and protein – all in the right amounts. Most babies digest mother’s milk better than formula and the antibodies in the milk can help fight infection and disease. In addition to creating a close bond between mother and child, nursing uses up extra calories so it’s easier to shed pounds gained while pregnant.

Lactation Consultants
To help you with breastfeeding, Florida Hospital Breastfeeding Centers have a team of 21 internationally board-certified Lactation Consultants on hand to answer your questions, provide consultation, arrange for breast pumps and teach you how to properly breastfeed. They are there every step of the way, so you can learn to breastfeed correctly and successfully.
