Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
It’s estimated that around 80% of women in the United States may have Uterine Fibroids. The majority of women do not have symptoms, but 1 in 4 will end up with symptoms severe enough to require treatment. Knowing the treatment alternatives is key to making a better decision. Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that could be your best-suited choice. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a relatively new approach to the nonsurgical treatment of uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) tumors of the uterus. They don’t always cause symptoms, but their size and location can lead to problems in some women, including pain and heavy bleeding. UFE is a less invasive technique that blocks the flow of blood to the fibroids, depriving them of the oxygen and nutrients they require to grow. The procedure is performed by an interventional radiologist, a specially trained radiologist who uses x-ray imaging to guide the procedure. The presence of fibroids is most often confirmed by an abdominal ultrasound or an MRI or CTA scan. Appropriate treatment depends on the size and location of the fibroids, as well as the severity of the symptoms. |
