Osteoporosis & DEXA Bone Density Testing

Reducing the Risks of Osteoporosis

Making Life With Osteoporosis More Manageable
Osteoporosis can strike at any age, often without any symptoms. It is most often associated with the onset of menopause, when a woman’s body loses up to 20% of her bone density in just 5 to 7 years. In fact, osteoporosis accounts for more days spent in the hospital by women over 45 years of age than many other diseases, including diabetes and breast cancer.

Lowering Risk Through Screening
However, there are steps you can take to prevent osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures caused by this debilitating and often undetected disease. A DEXA Scan measures the density of your bones and predicts the risk of fractures. Recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation, DEXA Scan is painless, quick, inexpensive and involves very low exposure to radiation.

Understanding the Risks

The statistics are chilling. One in three women over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures. Eighty five percent of all women will experience a wrist fracture during their life. The odds are even greater if you have a family history of osteoporosis. If you’re concerned about your bone health, ask your doctor to refer you to Florida Hospital and we’ll be happy to set up a bone density scan and provide you with methods for treating osteoporosis.
